The engine is likely experiencing a problem with fuel, spark, or timing. Common culprits include a weak battery, a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel injectors, a faulty crankshaft sensor, or a lack of spark due to bad spark plugs or ignition system issues.
First, check fuel and air:
- Fuel pump: The pump may be failing to send fuel to the engine. Listen for a whirring sound from the fuel tank when you turn the key to the “on” position. If you don’t hear it, the pump or its fuse/relay could be bad. Tapping the pump may temporarily help, but replacement is likely needed.
- Fuel injectors/filters: Clogged injectors or a clogged fuel filter can prevent fuel from reaching the engine.
- Flooding
- Air intake
Then, check spark and electrical:
- Battery
- Spark plugs
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Ignition system
Other Potential Issues Are:
Security lockout: The vehicle’s security system may be preventing the car from starting. Look for a blinking security light, which indicates a lockout.
Low compression: If the engine has lost compression, it won’t be able to start. This can be caused by problems with the valves or pistons.
Timing: The mechanical timing (e.g., timing belt or chain) could be off, preventing the valves and pistons from being synchronized correctly.
