All Ignition Systems in a vehicle are responsible, for creating a spark strong enough, to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder.
All this happens with the help of the Ignition Control Module (ECM), and is responsible for regulating, the ignition timing events.
Today, they comes in four different types:
-
Conventional breaker-point ignition
-
High energy (electronic) ignition
-
Distributor-less (waste spark) (DIS) ignition
-
Coil-on-plug (COP) ignition
The purpose of Ignition Systems is to generate a very high voltage from the vehicle’s 12 volt battery. And, send this to each spark plug in turn, igniting the fuel-air mixture in the engine’s combustion chambers.
