A crankshaft is the core rotating component in an engine. It converts the up-and-down (reciprocating) motion of the pistons into a rotational motion. Pistons push connecting rods attached to offset crankpins on the shaft. And cause it to spin, much like pedaling a bicycle. Key parts include main journals (where it spins in the block), crankpin journals (for connecting rods), and counterweights to balance forces.
