Primary Ignition System: Battery, Low Voltage Side Of The Circuit
Primary Ignition System, Battery, Low Voltage Side Of The Circuit

“Choose Your Help Topic Below”

This system is the low-voltage circuit that prepares the ignition coil to create a high-voltage spark. It includes the battery, ignition switch, and a coil with a primary winding, along with components like a ballast resistor and breaker points (in older systems) or an electronic control module.

When the ignition switch is on, current flows to the coil, building a magnetic field. When this current is suddenly broken, the collapsing magnetic field generates a high-voltage current in the secondary winding, which is then sent to the spark plugs to ignite the fuel-air mixture.
