A car’s thermostat regulates the engine’s temperature by controlling the flow of coolant to the radiator. When the engine is cold, it remains closed to help the engine warm up faster. Once the engine reaches its optimal operating temperature, the thermostat opens to allow coolant to flow to the radiator. Where it cools down before being sent back to the engine.
How Does It Work:
When the engine is cold:
The thermostat is closed. This prevents the coolant from flowing to the radiator and instead keeps it circulating within the engine block, allowing the engine to reach its optimal temperature more quickly.
When the engine is hot:
As the coolant gets hotter, the thermostat opens. This allows the hot coolant to flow out of the engine and into the radiator.
Cooling down:
In the radiator, the hot coolant is cooled by air flowing through the fins.
Returning to the engine:
The now cooler coolant flows back to the engine to repeat the cooling cycle.
Maintaining optimal temperature:
The thermostat opens and closes as needed to keep the engine’s temperature within the ideal range for optimal performance and fuel efficiency.
