So, How Does It Work:

Increased pressure: When the engine requires more, it restricts the bypass. And that increases the pressure in the rail to meet demand.
Vacuum reference: A hose often connects it to the intake manifold. When the engine is under heavy load, it creates more vacuum. And, signals the regulator to increase pressure. During idle, the lower vacuum level results in lower pressure to prevent the engine from running too rich.
Modern systems: In modern vehicles, the electronic control unit (ECU) can control pressure more precisely. By adjusting the fuel pump’s output or using an electronically controlled regulator.
