OBD-I, or On-Board Diagnostics I, is the first generation of vehicle self-diagnostic systems used in vehicles from the 1980s to the mid-1990s. It was a basic system primarily focused on monitoring emissions, but it lacked standardization, meaning each manufacturer used its own proprietary connectors, hardware, and protocols. Diagnosing a vehicle required specialized tools for each make, and codes were often displayed as simple blink codes.
