The parts of an engine are divided into the “top end” and “bottom end.” The bottom end includes the engine block, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, and related bearings. While, the top end includes the cylinder head(s), camshaft(s), valvetrain, intake manifold, and timing system.
Bottom End Components:
Block:
The central structure that houses the crankshaft and cylinders.
Crankshaft:
Converts the linear motion of the pistons into rotational motion.
Pistons:
Cylindrical components that move up and down inside the cylinders.
Connecting Rods:
Connect the pistons to the crankshaft, transferring power.
Bearings:
Allow the crankshaft and other rotating parts to spin with minimal friction.
Top End Components:
Cylinder Head(s):
Sit on top of the block, containing the valves and sometimes the camshafts.
Camshaft(s):
Control the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
Valvetrain:
Includes all the components that operate the valves, such as valves, springs, lifters, and pushrods.
Intake Manifold:
Distributes the air-fuel mixture to the cylinders.
Timing System:
Synchronizes the crankshaft and camshaft(s) using a gear, chain, or belt.
