A mechanical valve lifter, also known as a solid lifter, is a simple, solid metal cylinder in an engine’s valve train. It rides on the camshaft lobe to open valves. But unlike hydraulic lifters, they require periodic manual adjustment (setting “lash”) to maintain proper clearance for thermal expansion. That makes them noisier but great for high-performance or simpler engines due to their precision and reliability at high (RPM)s.
