An engine compression test measures the maximum pressure a cylinder can achieve during the compression stroke. To perform one, you must disable the fuel and ignition, then screw a compression gauge into each spark plug hole one at a time. Then you crank the engine over until the gauge needle stops rising and record the (PSI) reading for that cylinder before moving to the next. Consistent readings across all cylinders indicate a healthy engine
